The simple scale and the ability to weigh things with it, is something most of us largely take for granted. However, you may not be fully aware just how sophisticated modern scales have become. Obviously, their basic function remains but many can do a surprising amount more which can be a tremendous asset and help lower costs by increasing production, reducing packing time and simplifying both quality and stock control. Below is a brief summary of some of the most common types and an explanation of their functions and how they might be employed.

compact bench scale

Platform and bench scales
For weighing of goods on a flat platform that can be either floor or bench mounted. Often equipped with a built-in indicator or an auxiliary indicator that has an RS-232 interface for speedy connection to computers and printers.

checkweighing scales

Check-weighing scales
For comparing the weight of your product against adjustable pre-set limits, which allows you to check accepted weight tolerances quickly and easily.

counting scales

Counting scales
Not only weigh your products or items but also count the number of pieces in a lot.

dynamic weighing scales

Dynamic weighing scales
Have the ability to measure the weight of liquids accurately, even if the liquid in question happens to be moving inside the container.

balance scales

Balance scales
Are used to compare the weight or mass of objects against a set known weight by balancing them.

moisture analyser
Moisture analysers
Used for determining the moisture or water content of a product. Often used for measuring the water content in oil, fuel, chemicals in both solids and liquids.

price computing scales

Price computing scales
Mainly used by retailers to show the weight, price per unit and total cost of the product being sold or checked.

crane scales

Crane scales
Are used to measure the weight of a product from an overhead position. The scale is usually suspended from a beam or locating point over the top of the weigh point.

Many scales available offer a combination of the above functions and can be used for multi-purpose weighing, which of course can be a huge benefit for companies who conduct a variety of procedures. There are perhaps just as many potential users of scales and weighing equipment as there are types.

Industry sectors and types of scales used

  • Industrial and commercial – platform scales, bench counting, crane scales, precision balances, check weighing scales, pallet truck scales and pallet beam scales.
  • Laboratory – precision balances, analytical balances and moisture analysers.
  • Education – digital, mechanical and portable balances for science labs.
  • Catering and food – hygienic, easy to clean weighing scales.
  • Retail – commercial retail scales for price computing or selling goods by weight.
  • Health – platform scales for precise BMI measurement and personal weight check.
  • Vet/animal – platform scales for weighing small and large pets.
  • IT – all the above scales can either be linked or used by the IT departments of many businesses.

So when considering which type of scale is most suited to your needs, it can be worthwhile contacting a supplier who can offer professional advice to ensure the best outcome is reached and any investment made is effectual.
