You may be required under the Disability Discrimination Act to insert a ramp at the entrance to, or within a building. As with changes in level, they will need to be clearly highlighted to ensure both able bodied and the visually impaired pedestrians are aware of the slope.
As with any floors, ramps need to provide adequate slip resistance. Walking on an inclined surface requires a higher level of friction than walking on the level. When deciding on the surface finish of a ramp, consider what contamination is likely, eg rainwater, spills etc and how the ramp will be used, eg carrying, pushing wheelchairs and deliveries. Wheelchair ramps lightweight wheelchair ramps aluminium heavy duty ramps.
