Water may not be a suitable means to tackle every type of fire there is but water fire extinguishers are still a vital tool when it comes to tackling Class A fires involving common combustible materials such as wood, plastics and paper. The water in this extinguisher is pressurised by oxygen. It works by producing a jet of water onto the fire which then saturates the blaze. This results in flames being extinguished as the burning materials are cooled and unable to re-ignite. The water cools fuel surfaces and soaks the flammable fuels so that they cannot continue to burn, effectively removing heat from the fire triangle. Water fire extinguishers should never be used on electrical fires.
