Any business considering the purchase of a storage cupboard should ask themselves several questions before making their decision. While this may seem obvious, a little consideration before purchase means you’ll get the correct equipment for the job at hand.
The main question should be: what are we going to store in this cupboard? While this may seem a straightforward question to ask, in practise it is often found that many of the items that end up in cupboards do not actually need to be stored at all. Upon assessment, you may find that many items need to be disposed of rather than stored as there is no material benefit to them remaining around the workplace. Any archived paperwork such as invoices, order copies and associated stationery needs to be closely monitored, and out of date items disposed of safely. The term storage cupboard should become synonymous with necessary storage and not with harbouring useless data.
Hazardous items need to be treated separately. All too often, hazardous materials and liquids end up being stored in unsuitable cupboards. There are several ranges of cupboards and cabinets designed specifically to store items requiring COSHH control, so speak to your supplier about any items you fear could be flammable or hazardous before you purchase equipment – that way you’ll get the right product for your needs.
Security can also be a major factor when choosing your storage module. Items of value require different levels of safety and security, so look at what is being stored and how it needs to be kept safe. Once again, consulting with your supplier prior to purchase will lead to the appropriate product.
Weight loading is another area that can be overlooked when choosing a cupboard or cabinet. Make sure that the capacity of the shelves and unit are able to take the weight of the products being stored.
