When relocating to new premises, the thought of moving large pallet racking or shelving systems could be a daunting task. Not least the actual dismantling and re-erecting on site but the multitude of other considerations that have to be taken into account, like what to do with the stored stock and how to achieve the safe transit of goods and equipment? Our 50 years of experience came in very handy when we were asked to help with this project.

One of the UK’S most popular home furnishings companies recently wanted to move from their site in Warrington, to just a short hop 17 miles up the M62 to Liverpool. The company which had evolved from a general home furnishing store to one of the leading sofa and carpet specialists in the country, sought advice from us about what considerations would need thinking about for such a move. We put forward our proposals.

Once having made the decision to move, one of the problems for the company was how to reconfigure the entire contents of the warehouse without massive delays in delivery, production, or service to customers. The work began for us in early March 2020 with a site visit to the existing warehouse in Warrington and then the planning for relocation continued over the subsequent months with the project being executed at the start of September.

Here’s how we did it:

  1. One of our sales team visited the company’s then current location to determine the size and the scope of the project and understand the warehouse workflow and exactly what they wanted to achieve throughout the move.
  2. Next a visit to the new premises and a look at the building plans to establish how to best maximise the usable storage space and create time efficiencies for the business. This was the perfect time to assess whether additional new equipment should be purchased to facilitate the best outcome.
  3. Then our designers produced a pallet racking floor layout plan taking into consideration the above factors which was approved by the customer and our installation engineers.
  4. The uninstallation date was agreed and then we looked to organise the move. The choices were to either do it in one move or in stages to ensure that the warehouse was functional throughout the moving process. They opted for one move.
  5. As soon as the racking had been dismantled it was moved directly to the new premises. We project managed the transport to ensure that everyone was working to the same time frame, meaning that no downtime was experienced.
  6. Our installation team was on hand to receive the racking and commence the new installation in accordance with the approved plans.
  7. Restoration at the old warehouse was needed. With the racking dismantled we then removed any screw anchors and restored the old warehouse floor to its original condition for future use.
