One of our local council offices contacted us about coming up with a solution to provide a safe and dry rest room environment for their outdoor workers who often have to deal with adverse weather conditions. A 'dry room' was needed for staff to remove protective outdoor clothing, hang up those garments to dry and then to be able to put on new dry over clothes whilst enjoying a rest break.
A versatile and flexible solution was needed which would also allow the rooms to be moved around to different sites within the borough. The budget had to fit within the constraints of the current fiscal year.
After much debate and consideration of varying ideas, we come up with the plan of supplying some 'pre-loved' shipping containers which we would retrofit for purpose. After procuring several shipping containers built from corrugated Corten steel for strength, in various sizes to suit a variety of applications, we proceeded to fit them out with the following:
- Personnel 10 lever locking hinged door.
- 3ft x 3ft window with lockable steel shutters.
- Coat hooks.
- Double electrical sockets.
- 5ft strip lights.
- Exterior isolator waterproof socket.
- Tubular heaters (6ft and 4ft long).
- Extractor fan.
- Consumer unit – electrical distribution board containing circuit breakers and fuses.
- Poly floor covering laid over 28mm marine treated plywood, suited to withstand heavy foot traffic.
- Insulated with closed-cell foam rockwool and finished with a melamine covering preventing heat transfer, keeping cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
- 32amp 240V supply.
- Seating benches.
The units are a very cost effective, secure, vandal-proof room which are comfortable, insulated and easy to relocate. They can easily be made as a mobile office or canteen if required. Minimal groundwork is required to site them and the electrics just require a cable to plug in - simple!

Thinking outside the box or rather 'inside the box' helped to create an economic solution for the local council and the containers have now been effectively deployed to different sites for the workers to enjoy during their well-earned down time.
