Is the future all-electric?

Will an increase in the use of batteries, give us the ideal ‘power utopia’?

Whilst the government has made it law to push towards zero emission vehicles by 2035, just how realistic is this target? With many car manufacturers currently turning to hybrid production in favour of 100% electric vehicles, is the net zero target truly achievable?

As we head our way to a higher usage electric future, consider using less electricity as a way to net zero. Do we really want our beautiful countryside and coastline covered with ever increasing numbers of wind turbines? Some energy companies are applying to erect 220m high turbines. To put that into context: Big Ben is 96m high, Blackpool Tower is 158m high.

Ways to reduce electric usage and save money at the same time!

1. Look at your electric consumption
Refine your operations in order to reduce the amount used by using more efficient equipment, block out draughts, set your heating thermostat correctly and ensure heaters are free of obstructions.

2. Consider using manual equipment
Manual materials handling equipment is available for all manner of tasks: pushing, pulling, lifting, holding and cleaning. Once taught how to use the equipment with good handling technique, the long term benefits are significant for the operator’s health, reduction in sick days and less usage of electric.

3. Look at how your staff commute to work
Encourage the use of public transport, car sharing or utilise the ‘cycle to work scheme’ in an effort to reduce emissions.

4. Take control of your waste
Evaluate your systems and try to eliminate products that can’t be reused or recycled. Make sure all waste is collected correctly for recycling.

5. Recharging
Consider charging electric equipment overnight and at weekends when the rates are cheaper and there is less demand for power from the grid.

So is all-electric the way forward? Perhaps we need to weigh up the costs from all angles and find alternative approaches before taking the final step.
