We were recently approached by a long standing customer who have some storage issues with their engineer’s tools and equipment. The engineers use a wide variety of tools that need to be easily and quickly moved around the factory to carry out repairs and maintenance on an infrequent basis. When the tools are not in use, they are stored in a locked storage area with a strict inventory kept, to provide a level of security from theft. The existing storage method was to use some very old shelving units which were considered dangerous and in need of replacement. Some of the tools are very heavy so the engineers have to make several trips back and forth with a platform truck to make the transfer to the point of use. These trips may not be very far, maybe only 30 metres but the extended time method was causing delay issues.
We sent along our sales chap to have a look at the whole exercise which then allowed us to come up with recommendations. This is where an element of ‘thinking out of the box’ came into play! Why use two pieces of equipment when one could be adapted to cover both tasks? The storage requirement was to replace the old system with longspan shelving that had a maximum bay capacity of 400kg. The individual bays would need to be 1600mm high x 1500mm wide, with a depth of 600mm and all complete with 4 chipboard shelves and beam locking pins. The transportation trips could easily be made into one trip by making the longspan shelving units totally mobile, so we recommended fitting the shelving units with a four-castor base, supplied with 125mm diameter nylon wheels, two of which would be fitted with brakes.

We subsequently trialled two of these mobile shelving units and they proved to be such a success that the customer then ordered 22 more and extended their use from the original engineer’s task, out to a ‘pick and pack’ usage within their despatch department as well.
We excel in innovative solutions and our bespoke products team is dedicated to meeting your unique requirements, offering tailored equipment recommendations.
