A UK based laboratory recently contacted us with a very specific safety problem. They needed a safe and stable way to move tall gas cylinders around within their facility. The cylinders were 1430mm in height, 230mm diameter and weighed around 100kg. Transporting these cylinders across uneven surfaces, gradients and raised door thresholds is something that standard gas cylinder trolleys are not built to handle.
The customer had researched online models and found that typically they featured a single rear jockey wheel that lacked the stability and manoeuvrability required for their environment or were mounted on two smaller castors that whilst suitable for most normal use, would not be strong enough for this particular task. Not only was this a safety concern for the operator, but it also posed a damage risk to nearby valuable equipment and a combustible risk from the cylinder itself. Frustrated with the off-the-shelf options that were available, the lab team reached out to us. They needed something far more robust and ultimately, something that was bespoke made.
Understanding customer usage needs and the individual workplace requirements is key to providing the very best safety standards. We therefore manufactured a custom built four wheeled gas cylinder truck, engineered with the following attributes in mind:
- To securely transport tall cylinders with maximum stability.
- To be able to navigate thresholds, gradients and uneven flooring with ease.
- To comply with health and safety requirements in laboratory environments.
- To have a fully welded steel construction fitted with high quality wheels.
- Engineered for exceptional longevity in high-stress, rugged environments.
We don’t do flimsy! Our clients need equipment they can trust every day and we make sure they get exactly that! If you have a bespoke requirement then we can provide a purpose-built answer. This isn’t just a one-off success; it’s a reminder of what is possible when customers look beyond generic solutions and partner with suppliers who can supply exactly the correct item of equipment. For industries where safety, efficiency and reliability are non-negotiable, bespoke products like this can make all the difference.
- The safe way to move and store gas cylinders is something that requires careful planning. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) provide excellent advice and information on this subject. An initial draw up of a checklist can provide the sensible route for businesses to follow:
- Establish the exact contents of your cylinders and inspection routines for maintaining them.
- Decide on whether it is appropriate to store your cylinders indoors or outdoors.
- Demonstrate that effective ventilation and control of ignition sources are available.
- Complete a risk assessment to establish compatibility with other stored materials.
- Establish a secure and safe method of storing your cylinders.
- Ensure that you have a safe method of moving your cylinders around.
