Every year these two events come along before you have even had time to think about them. Suddenly, you think “Oh, I'd have loved to have gone to that!” But, by then of course you have missed the boat for yet another year!
So, what are we talking about? The first is the world’s greatest platform for creative freedom. It’s an absolute must go!
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival takes place every August in Scotland’s capital city from the 7th to the 31st. Over 3,600 shows have been announced with many more the be added late in the day. You can browse the shows and book tickets online. https://www.edfringe.com/tickets
Whether you plan for just a day visit or a multi-day trip, you must book tickets and accommodation as soon as possible, because the Fringe gets busy and quickly sells out. You can choose to wander around the festival and watch many of the free street shows or book to see preferred artists of your choice.
The Fringe started way back in 1947 and has grown bigger year by year, with ticket sales reaching over 3 million and visitor numbers as high as 4 - 4.5 million over the combined attendances across all of Edinburgh’s August festivals.

The second event is the greatest community-led carnival on the planet! It is Europe’s biggest street festival and celebrates Caribbean culture and history in West London. We are of course talking about the Notting Hill Carnival which takes place over the August Bank Holiday from Saturday 29th to Monday 31st.
Notting Hill Carnival is another ‘bucket list’ must go and see event. The areas including Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park and Kensal Road are all places that come together to create this fantastic event.
The Carnival’s origin dates back to 1959 with an indoor event staged at St Pancras Town Hall, but the first outdoor neighbourhood festival street event was organised by community activist Rhaune Laslett, aimed at bringing together diverse multicultural communities across West London in August 1966. Today the carnival encompasses MAS Bands, Steel Bands, Brazilian Bands, Soca and Calypso along with great sound systems, live stages and plenty of food and drink.
