Action Handling has worked extensively with clients in the automotive sector for over 40 years, offering expert advice and solutions to satisfy requirements for any application.

During the summer of 2012, the UK car industry enjoyed a 22% increase in production compared to the same period in 2011. Therefore, it was no surprise that a gargantuan amount of materials were being transported and used to keep up with demand. At this time, a leading UK Car Parts Supplier contacted us for help improving the operation of their warehouse. Our Sales Director, Stephen Phillips, met with the site contact to perform a complete analysis of the supply chain and production line to assess where improvements could be made.

During the assessment it was noted that the replenishment of small parts to the assembly area was greatly affecting efficiency on the warehouse floor. Engineers on the production line had to manually retrieve specific parts to restock as required, and there was no equipment in use that would make this task any more efficient.

After gathering further information from the client regarding the size, quantity and frequency of parts being retrieved, our design team were able to propose a recommendation specific to the client’s exact requirements. A bespoke Shelf Tow Truck Pallet with two main uses: 1) Store multiple car parts on individual shelves when not-in use and 2) Transport the parts across the factory, being towed in train by powered tow tugs.

Full working drawings were submitted to our client, along with a working prototype. This was such a success that an order for 14 units was confirmed with a view to a further 26 units being supplied if required in future. The first units were fabricated and delivered within 3 working weeks.

We’re pleased to report that our customer found these trailers so effective that there are now a total of 50 units on site being used on a daily basis, and productivity has increased.
