When the world’s largest supplier of car roof systems needed help to deal with exceptional growth in sales, they contacted Action Handling to find a solution.

The client develops, manufactures and markets load carrier systems for car owners all over the world. Their range includes roof boxes, accessories for transporting bikes, skis, snowboards, canoes, surfboards and much more. Distribution across the UK had started to grow and their current storage systems were unable to keep up with demand. Their UK distribution site was beginning to buckle under the pressure of increased volume, even though the client already had our pallet beam racking and slot-fix shelving system in place. With this in mind, Action Handling were called back to site based on our professional approach, understanding of customer requirements and extremely competitive prices.

The objective was to increase storage capabilities and improve how items were stored and picked to keep up with demand. Once the assessment was completed, our production team began to explore the best possible way to introduce a live storage rack system on site, so components that were moving quickly could be picked and replenished efficiently while also freeing up dead space. Using the existing framework of the pallet beam racking already on-site, we were able to install a new live storage system and, according to the client’s production manager, carry out “a very neat job“.

The client is now able to stock fast-moving products from their new live storage system, ensuring stock rotation is maximised and productivity increased through separation of loading and picking activities. The new system also ensures that order pickers do not run out of stock, that all items can be directly accessed at the picking face and that there is enough stock from each product line in every lane. The end result was an enormous saving on time, an increase in productivity and a very satisfied customer.
