Your warehouse health and safety checklist is important to maintain because it ensures a solid framework within which staff should operate. When staff spend several hours a day working in pallet racking areas it’s extremely important to manage health and safety in order to avoid serious accidents. The only way in which an employer can make their premises less prone to accidents is through a comprehensive assessment and production of a safety program, and every business should have a health and safety checklist to help identify any risks in the work environment and how best to reduce them.

Action Handling are no different and in the interest of improved health and safety, we’ve decided to share our checklist with you. Here are seven basic tips to improve safety in any factory or warehouse storage area:

  1.  CLEAR AISLES:
All aisles should be kept clear. Even something as innocuous as a chair or box left in an aisle can cause an accident, if someone doesn’t see it in time.
  2. TIDY SHELVES:
Keep all shelving units neat and orderly.
  3. ACCESSIBLE HEIGHTS:
Shelving units should not be too high. Access should be able to be made safely and without undue risk or exertion.
  4. HEAVY GOODS LOW, LIGHT GOODS HIGH:
All heavy items should be kept in the bottom rack for easy access and reduced strain or risk of injury.
  5. AVOID OVERCROWDING:
There should be sufficient space around shelving and storage units for staff to safely access items.
  6. NO TRASH:
Remove all combustibles, rubbish or waste and ensure there are sufficient bins in every working environment.
  7. HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES HANDLED CORRECTLY:
Toxic waste should be separated from other wastes and stored in appropriate containers.

Effective workplace training is the only way to pass any workplace safety audit. However detailed your risk assessment checklist or workplace safety policy is, a strong employee training programme is the key. Keep up to date with regular training, transparent policies and the correct equipment.
